Camping with us!

New Desert Outpost is a diverse collection of people from many backgrounds and ages. Most of our campers join through referrals, but we’re always open to meeting folks who can help the camp thrive.

The Basics: Sexy Camp Amenities

What can you expect while camping with us?

  • Communal space:
    • Front-of-House: Our camp offers a front courtyard area for events and to welcome guests. Our own campmates are also more than welcome to hang out in that area too. Go make friends!
    • Back-of-House: We also have a private back of house area (behind the backdrops) just for our campers. Feel free to bring things that make this area more comfortable and homey.
  • Breakfast and Dinner: Provided Monday morning - Sunday morning!
    • Vegetarian and non-vegetarian: Both options provided. Please let us know if you have specific dietary restrictions.
    • Dinner: Social opportunities for the camp each evening. Scheduled roughly around sunset as campers are often returning to camp to exchange their daytime for nighttime attire.
    • Breakfast: More informal given the variation in camper’s morning routines. These will include coffee and some basic breakfast staples (eg. oatmeal, cereal, dried fruit).
    • Campers must bring and wash their own mess kits.
  • Kitchen: Our kitchen setup includes two large burners and a motley assortment of cooking implements, knives, and a dishwashing station.
  • Tent Shade: Your tent is no match for the Playa sun, but under our massive shade structure you should be able to happily snooze until, like, 9.
  • Drinking Water: We provide drinking and communal meal cooking water for the camp during the burn. This is not water for showers, which you should bring yourself.
    • Campers should pack 5 gallons of emergency backup water for the gate line or other unexpected scenarios.
  • Greywater disposal: We have a greywater container in the back of camp. Use it to dispose of toothpaste, wash water, kitchen liquids, and warm beer water. No bodily fluids!
  • Shower: The camp provides a basic gravity shower for rinsing off playa.
    • Campers must bring their own extra shower water if they wish to shower. Communal drinking water is not for showers.
  • Power: The camp power is provided from our solar and battery system with an emergency gas generator backup. This system has enough surplus for campers to charge their own small personal electronics (phones, camera, headlamps, string lights, etc).
    • We’ll have a dedicated area to plug in - please be courteous and remove your stuff when it’s done charging so everybody use it.
    • No electric bicycles, hair dryers, space heaters, AC units, or similar please! We need to ensure sufficient power to keep our food cold for the week.
    • Bring your own charging cables.

Being Part of the Team

It’s important that we create a community — not just a camp — and every camper plays an important role in this.

  • Work Shifts: All campers are expected to help during 3 work shifts, each approximately 2-3 hours, over the course of the week to keep things running smoothly (eg. help run an event or cleanup after a meal). Signups sheets will be shared before we leave for the burn. Please show up on time, get things done, and be proactive in swapping if needed.
  • Camp tear down: By the end of the week, everybody is tired and just wants to leave. Before we can leave though we need to tear down the camp, pack everything up, and make sure there’s absolutely no moop left behind. Burning man is serious when it comes to leaving no trace. Everyone in camp is involved in teardown. If you’re leaving before the weekend, talk to one of the camp leads about how to make teardown easier.
  • Participation: Come hang out with us and help make the camp events awesome! Leading up to the burn we host regular happy hours and build days.
  • Departure: Departure process for each person includes:
    • Checking lost and found for personal items
    • Taking 1 bag of trash and 1 bag of recycling per car (or per person for Burner Express - this is included in your bus ticket)
    • Completing a final thorough moop sweep of your tent area
